Lord David Owen, Member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom, spoke to SKAI about the Russian invasion of Russia and Putin’s plans.
I know you do not have a crystal ball in front of you, but you have a lot of experience in foreign policy. How do you see things evolving and what is the most likely scenario we are currently considering?
Lord: “Let’s say they occupy the two areas where there is a large number of Russian-speakers and it has been over-equipped for eight years. Suppose they do that. Let’s see where they will go next. In the immediate future, as we have seen, they will attack and seek to move forward. But will they try to occupy the capital? Will they try to capture the next big city? I suspect they will go along the sea border to the bay. To follow the flow of water to the Crimea. To reach the Crimea and then to reach Odessa and try to exclude Ukraine from any exit to the Black Sea. Then push it, hit it at various strategic points, destroy power plants, exclude them from the supply of petrol or diesel or diesel, and from time to time choose various targets hoping to defeat the morale and ability of Ukraine to stand.”
You have written extensively about the insult syndrome and I wonder if you feel that Putin is showing classic signs of the insult syndrome in the sense that there is no one there to challenge his decisions.
Lord: “Since 2012, he seems to be starting to change his personality. And look at his face. What’s going on with this person? We are told that this is plastic surgery that went wrong or Botox injections. I’m afraid it might be something more worrying. It may well be the face of someone taking large doses of steroids. And that’s why he’s afraid to be anywhere near anyone who has been infected with COVID. Because steroids damage your immune system, they make it much harder for you. And then steroids affect your personality. “And I think he’s a different person and the intimidating way he talks to his employees, the kind of person he puts in, doesn’t seem to fit in perfectly with the Putin we’ve seen in the past.”
Lord Owen, one last question do you think the Cold War has returned to Europe?
Lord: “I am afraid it is turning into a hot war. I’m afraid that this is much more serious than the Cold War period, when people start using guns and killing people, when things go wrong, they start using more powerful weapons, they kill more people. This is extremely dangerous, very, very worrying. And we must all stay united. “
