A spokesman for the military wing of Hamas announced today that Palestinian militants had captured Israeli soldiers after a battle in Jabalia in the Gaza Strip, a claim denied by the Israeli military.

Without presenting evidence or citing a specific number of captives, Abu Ubaydah, a spokesman for the Al Qassam Brigades, said in a recorded message broadcast by Al Jazeera: “Our fighters ambushed a Zionist force inside a tunnel… When they withdrew , all members of the (Israeli military) force were either dead or wounded and captured.”

The reaction of the Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) was immediate, and they categorically denied the claim of Hamas. “The IDF clarifies that there was no incident in which a soldier was abducted,” a press release states.

A few hours earlier, it was known that a new round of negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement on the release of the Hamas hostages is expected to begin soon. A well-informed source said the decision to resume talks was made after the head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency met with the director of the US CIA and Qatar’s prime minister.

A Hamas official denied Israeli reports that the talks would begin in Cairo on Tuesday, telling Reuters news agency that “no date has been set”.
