The new parliament of North Macedonia, which resulted from the parliamentary elections on May 8, was formed today (28/05).

Afrim Gashi, of Albanian origin, was elected as the new Speaker of the Parliament, leader of one of the four parties that make up the Albanian opposition coalition, with the brand name “Axize”. The candidacy of Gassi, who was the only candidate for the position of Speaker of the House, was approved with 76 votes “in favor”. MPs from the VMRO-DPMNE party, MPs from the coalition “Axize” and MPs from the newly formed party “Xero” voted in favor of Afrim Ghasi. These three political formations will work together to form the new coalition government in North Macedonia. The new government, headed by VMRO-DPMNE leader Christian Mickoski, is expected to be formed around mid-June. In the coming days, the president of North Macedonia, Gordana Silianovska, is expected to hand Christian Mickoski the mandate to form a government.

In the parliamentary elections held on May 8, VMRO-DPMNE came first, occupying 58 of the 120 seats in the Parliament. 18 seats were taken by the outgoing ruling Social Democratic Party (SDSM) and the outgoing co-ruling Albanian party DUI. The coalition of four opposition Albanian parties with the name “Axizia” captured 14 seats, while six seats were secured by the nationalist, pro-Russian party “Left” and the newly formed party “Xero” of the mayor of Kumanovo, Maksim Dimitrievsky.

VMRO-DPMNE leader Christian Mickoski has started negotiations with the Albanian coalition “Worth” and the party “Know” to form a government, which provokes strong reactions from the DUI, which claims that as the first, among of Albanian parties, it should participate in the new government and not the opposition Albanian coalition. An Albanian party always participates in all the governments of North Macedonia, among other things to maintain the fragile international balance in the country. Albanians make up 25% of the country’s population.

Christian Mickoski has ruled out any possibility of post-election cooperation with the DUI, which for the past 20 years has participated in all the country’s coalition governments.
