The Palestinian Minister of Health today called on the US to put pressure on Israel to open the Rafa passageused to bring humanitarian and medical supplies into the area, saying there was no indication that Israeli authorities would open it anytime soon.

Rafah was a key entry point for humanitarian aid before Israel escalated its military offensive on the Gaza side of the border earlier this month and took control of the crossing from the Palestinian side.

WHO for Rafa

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said its closure has significantly affected its ability to deliver essential medical supplies to the Gaza Strip, which has been targeted by Israeli forces since Hamas’s October 7 incursion into southern Israel.

“There is no indication that they want to open it,” said the Palestinian minister Abu Ramadan to journalists on the sidelines of the World Health Conference in Geneva.

“However, I would expect all of our friends and the international community to push hard, and the United States of America in particular, must push hard for it to open.”

Abu Ramadan said the closure of the crossing “complicates the situation, making it really very catastrophic.”

Israel sent its armored vehicles into Rafah for the first time yesterday despite an International Court of Justice order to halt its attacks on the town.
