Focus is to get Brazilians out of Ukraine as quickly as possible, says Civil House Minister

by

Minister Ciro Nogueira (Casa Civil) says that the priority of the federal government is to make it possible for Brazilians to leave Ukraine, the target of Russian attacks since dawn this Thursday (24).

There are about 500 Brazilians in the country, according to the Itamaraty. “Our focus is to protect Brazilians and get them out of there as quickly as possible,” he told sheet Ciro Nogueira.

For now, the ministry’s recommendation is for them to follow the embassy’s guidelines and, in the case of residents of eastern Ukraine, to travel to Kiev when there is security.

Government members have advocated that President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) remain neutral and avoid making comments about the war. The Chief Executive met last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Thursday, he ignored the invasion by talking to supporters in the playpen at Palácio da Alvorada and on social media.

The Ukrainian embassy in Brazil called on the Brazilian government on Thursday to condemn what it called “Russian aggression”.

After four months of crisis with the West, Russia decided to attack Ukraine this Thursday, in what Kiev and NATO (the western military alliance) called a total invasion.

It is the most serious military crisis in Europe since World War II, and the biggest such operation since the United States invaded Iraq in 2003.

as showed the sheetthe escalation of tensions in Ukraine —which culminated in the decision of Russian leader Vladimir Putin to invade the country— has forced the Itamaraty to promote a rhetorical juggling act to show, at the same time, opposition to a violation of international law by Moscow without pointing out the finger directly against Russia.

The Russians are considered strategic partners and are Brazil’s partners in the BRICS (a group also formed by India, China and South Africa).
