The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, emphasized yesterday Thursday that the already huge number of people who have become displaced and refugees worldwide continues to swell, while denouncing the inaction of the UN Security Council.

“The number of people forced from their homes by war, violence and persecution stood at 114 million at our last count. Next month, we will update this number. It will be even higher,” he underlined, addressing the representatives of the member states of the fifteen-member top body of the international organization.

The Italian diplomat, 67, lamented the fact that since his last report in October, “seven months have passed but the situation has not changed — in fact, it has worsened,” referring to growing violations of international law and escalating pressure to the workers in the humanitarian organizations, on the “brink of collapse”.

“The cacophony of the Council has meant that you continue to preside over wider cacophony and chaos in the world,” he added, addressing the SA, which remains paralyzed by insurmountable disagreements among its permanent member states.

“It’s too late for the tens of thousands of people who died in the Gaza Strip, in Ukraine, in Sudan, in DR Congo, in Myanmar, in so many other places (…) but it’s not too late to try to save millions more from the scourge of war,” added Filippo Grandi.
