Zelensky also said it was only a matter of time before Ukraine used Western weapons to strike Russian soil.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the NATO summit in July should handle the issue of Ukraine’s invitation to join the Alliance, speaking at a press conference in Stockholm today.
“The summit should be productive, and Ukraine considers that this cannot be achieved without mentioning the issue of inviting Ukraine (to join) NATO,” Zelensky said.
In addition, he said that it is only a matter of time before Ukraine uses Western weapons to strike Russian soil.
It is noted that yesterday the president of the United States, Joe Biden, gave the “green light” to the use of American weapons for strikes against targets in Russian territory near Kharkiv, according to American officials.
On condition of anonymity, they clarify that Washington does not allow Kiev to use ATACMS or long-range missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia.
As they explain, the Biden administration is allowing the use of US weapons to counterattack in the Kharkiv region so that Kiev can target Russian armed forces that are already attacking or preparing to attack the Ukrainian military. So far, the White House and the State Department have not commented.
Pressure on the United States to give the go-ahead for Ukraine to use the Western weapons it has procured against Russian territory had already begun to mount, with Moscow for its part, but warning with serious consequences and the Kremlin accusing NATO of starting a new cycle of escalation.
Washington has already appeared to leave open the possibility of adjusting its stance on the use of Western weapons in Kiev, with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stressing that the United States “always takes into account what is necessary to done in order to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself.”
In the Western camp in favor of using Western weapons systems against Russia’s internationally recognized borders remains French President Emmanuel Macron, who during his visit to Germany made it clear that Ukraine should be allowed to use Western weapons against of Russian territory but not against civilians. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is also in favor, stressing that Ukraine has a right to defend itself and that includes strikes against targets on Russian soil.
