The images of Ukrainian citizens who took refuge in the Kiev metro overnight are shocking.
The onslaught of Russian forces forced many to flee their homes and take refuge in safe places, such as subway stations.
In fact, many twitter users compared yesterday’s images to those from 1940, when Londoners took to the subway to protect themselves from Nazi bombs.

This night I and my friends spend in the Kiev subway. And could be at home in bed, and get up in the morning for work. pic.twitter.com/smxyt4rwUO

My 8-year-old has heard reports on @NPR and seen headlines in our newspapers. So she asked me yesterday what we would do if Dallas was attacked. I tried to explain I do not think that will happen, but today I’m thinking of the parents and children in the subway tunnels in Kiev. pic.twitter.com/Td2htqVLzf
