THE British ambassador in Mexico was fired earlier this year after allegedly pointing a gun at a local embassy employee – an incident captured on video and circulated on social media, the Financial Times reported today.
Ambassador John Benjamin was traveling to two Mexican states known for their strong cartel presence when he raised a gun and pointed at an employee inside the vehicle they were traveling in, the paper said, citing the video and people with knowledge of the matter. .
The incident took place in April, the sources told Financial Times and Benjamin was fired soon after. Benjamin’s LinkedIn page says his term as ambassador ended in May, and his CV on the UK government’s website says he “was UK ambassador to Mexico between 2021 and 2024”.
He did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did the British embassy in Mexico.
A video apparently showing the incident in question was first posted on social media X earlier this week by a recently created anonymous account with the username @subdiplomatic.
The video shows a man, believed to be Benjamin, sitting in the driver’s side of a parked SUV, and smilingly turning around to flag down someone sitting in the back seat. The video has not been verified by Reuters.
