The EU Foreign Ministers are holding an extraordinary meeting on the war in Ukraine

by

The foreign ministers of the 27 EU Member States will meet today for an extraordinary meeting on Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Diplomats said the summit would begin at 4pm Greek time and would include discussions on further options in support of Ukraine and how the EU should deal with Russia advancing its forces.

The summit comes after an agreement was reached last Thursday night by EU leaders to impose a massive new package of sanctions on Russia targeting the country’s energy, financial and transport sectors.

The package includes technology export bans and restricts Moscow’s access to EU financial markets.

“The package of massive and targeted sanctions adopted tonight shows how united the EU is,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said overnight.

The measures include sanctions “targeting 70% of the Russian banking market and major state-owned companies”, as well as Russia’s energy sector, she said.

The EU has also banned the sale of aircraft and equipment to Russian airlines and cut off Russia’s access to “critical technology”.

“Finally: visas,” von der Layen said in a Twitter message after six hours of consultations involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “Diplomats and related groups and businessmen will no longer have privileged access to the European Union,” he said.

EU leaders met after Russia launched a multi-pronged offensive, also from Belarus, into Ukraine yesterday, which Kiev described as a “full-scale invasion” by land, naval and air forces.
