Many European officials resent Ursula von der Leyen for flirting with Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Italian government ahead of the election
As possible candidate for her position president her European Commissionin case Ursula von der Leyen fails to be elected, “Politico” magazine presents the German foreign minister, Analena Burbok.
According to BILD, which broadcasts the magazine’s article, after the European elections, the position that Chancellor Olaf Solz will take on the matter will be of particular importance.
“And it is becoming more and more clear: h dissatisfaction with von der Leyen in the top post she is big among many important actors of the EU”, reports the newspaper and points out that e.g. the French president Emmanuel Macron, instead of another politician from the conservative faction, would prefer the former prime minister of Italy and former head of the ECB, Mario Draghi.
“And he is not alone in this: even Chancellor Olaf Scholz resents Mrs von der Leyen because she flirted with the right-wing Italian government of Giorgia Meloni before the election. Mr. Scholz could leave the current German head of the Commission,” writes BILD and refers to the Politico article, to convey the information that many in the Social Democratic Party (SPD) like Mario Draghi.
However, as the newspaper reminds us, in the programmatic agreement of the SPD with the Greens and the Liberals (FDP) it is foreseen that if the head of the Commission is not German, then the next German commissioner will be appointed by the Greens. “There are very few high-profile figures with experience, so the name of Analena Burbok comes to mind. The foreign minister is also said to be in talks for a position on the Commission, even if she doesn’t become its president,” continues BILD.
