THE Germany tightens security measures before it starts Euro 2024 on June 14, to prevent possible threats from Islamists, hooligans and cyber attacks, the interior minister said today (4/6) Nancy Feser.

Germany expects 2.7 million people to watch matches at the tournament’s stadiums across the country and around 12 million in “fan zones”, Feser said, but security fears have grown after a series of attacks in recent months .

“There are no concrete indications of a threat, but Germany is doing everything possible to make the event safe, Feser said.

“You can never guarantee 100% security, but we are well prepared and remain very vigilant,” he told reporters, saying there would be a heavy police presence, supported by officers from other countries and 16,000 volunteers.

Amid a polarized political climate that has seen several attacks on politicians, a knife-wielding 25-year-old seriously injured six people at a right-wing rally in Mannheim on Friday. One police officer died of his injuries. The assailant was shot.

Feser said the tournament was, however, an opportunity for people to come together:

“We want to show that sport means respect and cohesion,” he said.
