Dangerous heat wave is expected in the western part of the US, warned yesterday, Tuesday, the country’s meteorological services, which expressed fears of record temperatures, as happened in Mexico a few days earlier.

In southern California in particular, the thermometer can reach 38 degrees Celsius, i.e. show 15 degrees above the normal temperature for this season.

This heat wave “will affect much of the western US in the coming days,” the US National Weather Service (NWS) said in a statement. “We expect temperature records to be broken or similar (records).”

According to scientists, repeated heat waves are an unmistakable sign of global warming, and these heat waves are expected to double, last longer and intensify.

The warnings of the meteorological services concern some parts of California, Nevada and Arizona. The weather service is calling for “dangerous conditions” for people without air conditioning as temperatures are not expected to drop overnight.

The temperature in Las Vegas it can reach 44 degrees Celsius.

“Extreme temperatures are a visible but dangerous consequence of climate change, and those who work outdoors, the elderly and children are especially vulnerable,” the California Environmental Protection Agency said in a statement.

The announcement of the meteorological services also concerns Texas, while in its border city Rio Grande the temperature is expected to reach 47 degrees Celsius.

The neighbor Mexico also experienced a heat wave. Its capital, although at an altitude of 2,240 meters, recorded at the end of May a new record of 34.7 degrees Celsius. The country has reported 48 deaths from the phenomenon since March, according to a government announcement in late May.

These heat waves are part of a worrying global context. Every month since June 2023 has seen a new temperature record, and 2023 was by far the hottest year on record.

According to a report by the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Climate Center released last week, climate change caused an average of 26 extra days of extreme heat worldwide over the past 12 months.

In addition, in recent weeks, heat waves have hit India in the midst of elections, claiming the lives of 33 electoral representatives in just one day, Saturday, and in just one state, Uttar Pradesh, in the northern part of the country.
