Qatar was visited today by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who met with Emir Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.

The two leaders discussed developments in the Ukraine war, “including the international community’s efforts to stop the war, protect civilians and keep open all channels of communication to resolve the crisis through dialogue and diplomatic means,” according to the official Qatar News Agency (QNA). Efforts to strengthen bilateral relations were also discussed, he adds.

For his part, Volodymyr Zelensky said he thanked the emir for the positions he expressed in favor of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and for supporting Qatar in the UN resolutions condemning Russia. He also expressed his gratitude for Qatar’s mediation that led to the repatriation of dozens of children from Ukraine who had been taken to Russia after the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Zelensky’s visit to Qatar is part of his efforts to persuade leaders to participate in the June 15-16 Ukraine peace summit near Lucerne, Switzerland. According to Ukrainian officials, more than 100 countries and international organizations are expected to participate.

Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sibykha visited Beijing today in order to persuade the Chinese government to participate in the Swiss summit.

Russia, which has not been invited, describes any meeting without its participation as pointless.
