Biden: We strengthen Europe’s defense – We do not send troops to Ukraine

by

US President Joe Biden said today, after a video conference of the leaders of NATO member countries, that the alliance will maintain the “Open Doors” policy for those European countries that share its values and one day want to join.

In a statement, the US president stressed that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had failed in his goal of dividing the West. He reiterated that the United States would defend every inch of NATO territory.

Earlier in the day, Biden assured Ukrainian President Vladimir Putin that he would continue to provide US support to Ukraine in the areas of economy, security and humanitarian affairs.

Biden added that he had ordered the deployment of additional forces to support US allies in NATO. A White House spokeswoman said the United States would not send US troops to Ukraine, but the Pentagon said it would provide additional security assistance.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States, as Britain and the European Union have already done, would impose sanctions on Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Banning entry into the US will be “part” of those sanctions. He did not elaborate, however, saying details of the “historic” sanctions against a Russian president would be announced later.

Biden will be in Delaware over the weekend, where he is scheduled to meet with his security advisers.
