The president of the main opposition Kemalist Republican People’s Party (CHP), Ozgur Ozel, was visited by the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, at 4:00 PM today, at the party’s offices in Ankara.

This is the long-awaited return visit of the Turkish president, after the meeting the two politicians had on May 2 at the offices of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), in the context of the “normalization process” of Turkish political life declared by both sides. after the March 31 local elections. It was Erdogan’s first visit to the CHP offices in 18 years, when he was still prime minister.

The Erdogan-Ozel meeting lasted about an hour and a half without statements to the press representatives from the two political leaders.

His representative AKR Omer Celik, in his statements after the meeting, said that President Erdoğan raised the issue of revising the Constitution with the widest possible political consensus and discussed issues related to the economy. According to Celik, the Turkish president asked him Ozgur Ozel to demonstrate together with the other parties strong unity and solidarity during the events for the 50th anniversary of the invasion of Cyprus. He also said that “it is important to strengthen cooperation in the coming period and to respond to the rise of the far right in Europe. Another issue discussed, according to the AKP spokesman, was the war in Gaza. “We, as political parties, should take a common position against the policy of genocide in Gaza and strengthen our sensitivity in relation to the Palestinian state,” said the representative of the AKP, stressing that “the briefing by Mr. Ozel Socialist International (of which the CHP is a member) will be extremely valuable.”
