Efforts to form alliances to build a bulwark on the far right are intense. The left Popular Front was already created
Emmanuel Macron’s much-anticipated press conference scheduled for this afternoon and awaited by his supporters to kick off his parliamentary election campaign has finally been canceled and moved to tomorrow. Meanwhile, the atmosphere from yesterday remains electrified with the anxiety of the candidates to have time to build alliances, forgetting the previous conflicts over the European elections. They have until Sunday at 06:00 pm.
For now, the big news of the day is the agreement of the leftist parties to establish a “People’s Front” in order to block the takeover of power by the extreme right. The negotiations between the four parties of the Left (Environmentalists, Disobedients, Communists and Socialists) lasted six hours until late yesterday. Outraged, the young people protesting in Republic Square singing “Find an Agreement” came shouting outside the meeting building until the head of the Environmentalists announced: “We did it, we reached an Agreement.”
This is an agreement in principle. To go down united in the struggle with the establishment of a popular front which means one and only candidate in each electoral district and a common program that is feverishly prepared. The details of the program are expected to be given immediately in the next hours and days. Yesterday’s meeting did not include the founder of the NUPES Union, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who is considered undesirable by a portion of the Union’s leftists and above all by Raphael Glixman, who came first in the European elections with a percentage of 13.15%. In the National Alarm of the extreme right, Le Pen and Bardela did not rest on their laurels and they too have been active in two directions: to the right by inviting Marion Marechal avoiding Eric Zemur and on the other hand to the Republicans of the democratic right. In Sarkozy’s now-shrinking former party, some appear vulnerable to Le Pen’s temptations and persistent calls to grow what she calls the “Alert Nation”. There are even rumors of secret meetings between Le Pen and Eric Ciotti. Eric Ciotti, the leader of the Republicans, has announced that he is in favor of an electoral agreement with Le Pen’s National Alarm. Members of his party categorically deny any cooperation with Le Pen, among whom Xavier Bertrand (an important executive) demanded this morning from Eric Cioti “clarification of his positions”.
