A number of artworks stolen from a Copenhagen gallery on March 31 have been found
In Copenhagen, the investigation into the alleged theft of a bicycle has led to the discovery of art stolen during a gallery burglary in late March, police said today.
In the Danish capital, more than 17,000 bicycles were stolen in 2023, and this is precisely the crime that worries Copenhagen residents the most, according to a municipal survey. Some bike riders install GPS on them so that they can be located even after a theft.
It was the tracking system of a stolen bike that led police to an address in the southern suburbs of Copenhagen, where they conducted an investigation.
“It was much more than just a stolen bike that was found at this address,” police said in a news release.
“Eleven tricycles and electric bikes, which had been stolen, were seized. In addition, a number of works of art were found, which had been stolen from a Copenhagen gallery on March 31,” the relevant announcement clarifies.
Two men, aged 32 and 40, were arrested on the spot, who are suspected of grand theft. Police are investigating how the artworks came into their possession.
On March 31, 20-30 works by artist Christian von Hornslet were stolen from his gallery in a burglary in which a car was used to break into the premises.
Fourteen of them were identified during the police investigation, his team said.
