During his intervention at the meeting of the group of G7 countries, this afternoon in Apulia, Lower Italy, Pope Francis emphasized that “artificial intelligence must always be combined with ethics” because “the one who must decide is the human, and not the machines’.

At the same time, referring to the ongoing wars on our planet, he asked to review the use of so-called “autonomous, lethal weapons” and to ban their use. “No machine should ever be able to choose to take a human life,” the pontiff stressed.

“Can this world work without politics? Can it find an effective path to global brotherhood and social justice without a positive policy exercise? Our answer to these last questions is “no”! Politics is useful,” added the Argentine pontiff.

Francis referred to the need for a “healthy politics” so that one can “look with hope and confidence to our future”. Finally, he advised all those active in the field of politics to ask for the input of experts from all sectors, in order to achieve essential changes of fundamental importance.
