Germany is moving at the pace of the European Football Championship from today, which until July 14 hosts 51 matches for EURO 2024 in 10 cities. The first match is expected on Friday night in Munich, Germany against Scotland in the presence of German President Frank-Balter Steinmeier and already Bavaria reminds… Highlands, having been filled with Scottish kilts under the sounds of bagpipes.

This is one side of the coin. On the other hand there is fear for security, in the shadow of the war in Ukraine and the Middle East. According to a recent poll, 50% of respondents are “concerned” or “very concerned” about security during the European Football Championship.

With an unprecedented security plan, which bears no resemblance to the successful World Cup hosted by Germany in 2006 in other times of peace, the top European event has been reduced to an ultimate endurance test for the German security services and the state apparatus as a whole. The cost of the event is already estimated at more than 650 million euros, with experts believing that it will be far exceeded.

Artificial intelligence and drone deterrence systems

22,000 police officers will be on foot every day in all the cities where the European Championship matches will be held, while a special police operations and coordination center has been set up in Neuss exclusively for EURO 2024, with the cooperation of police officers from all the countries that participate in the event.

At the same time, thorough checks are already in place at all the country’s entry gates, along the land borders, at airports and ports. According to German authorities, drone deterrent systems will be used in major cities and for the first time extensive use of artificial intelligence technologies will be tested, e.g. facial recognition in fan zones and public viewing points.

Physical checks will be particularly increased at these points. Especially in Berlin, whose historic center around the Parliament and the Brandenburg Gate has been turned into a huge stadium, the security plan that has been drawn up is estimated at 10 million euros.

For Secretary of the Interior Nancy Fesser and the Secret Service, the three major risks are clearly defined: first, the Islamist threat and individual attacks primarily from the Islamic State of Khorasan, then fanatical violence and hooliganism, and finally, hybrid cyberattacks

According to the Ministry of the Interior’s central plan for the European Football Championship, both the Federal Civil Protection Service and the Federal Information Security Service will also be on full alert until the end of the event.
