Many areas of the central and eastern US are bracing for a heat wave next week, with temperatures unusually high for June.

“Temperatures will take off next week in the Midwest and Northwest” regions of the country, the US National Weather Service (NWS) warned yesterday via X, stressing that it is discounting “dozens” of record high temperatures.

The heat wave will begin to hit the central part of the US starting today Sunday and will spread to the Midwest and Northeast until Tuesday. It is expected to last all of next week, the NWS noted.

“Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in most years. Take it seriously,” the meteorological service emphasized.

The US capital Washington has already activated a “state of emergency” since yesterday, announced its mayor Meriel Bowser, as “extreme temperatures are expected next week”.

The mercury is expected to reach 38° Celsius on June 23.

Other big cities (Chicago, New York) are expected to be tested.

According to scientists, repeated and long-lasting heat waves are an undeniable sign of global warming and are expected to multiply, lengthen and escalate even more in the coming years.
