Facebook bans Russian state media from advertising and making money on its network

by

Facebook on Friday restricted the activity of Russian state media on its platform, which will not be able to advertise or make money from their activities, a reaction to the invasion of Ukraine.

“We are banning Russian state media from running ads or monetizing on our platform anywhere in the world,” the social network’s director of security policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, said on Twitter.

According to him, the platform “will continue to apply hashtags to Russian state media”.

The invasion of Ukraine gave rise to an explosion of fake news on the internet, especially on social networks, a phenomenon that has become recurrent every time there is a conflict.

“Yesterday, Russian authorities ordered us to stop checking and warning about content published by four Russian state-controlled media,” Meta vice president Nick Clegg wrote.

“We refused. As a result, they announced that they would restrict access to our services,” he added.

The statement came hours after Russia’s media regulator said it was limiting access to Facebook, accusing the American giant of censorship and violating the rights of its citizens.
