Ottawa says Tehran has shown ‘contempt for human rights’
Canada’s government announced today that it will include the Revolutionary Guards, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ideological army, on its list of “terrorist” organizations.
“Our government has decided to include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the list of terrorist entities, based on the penal codePublic Security Minister Dominique LeBlanc announced.
Ottawa believes that Tehran has demonstrated “contempt for human rights” and “desire to destabilize the international order».
Following this ruling, Canada can now freeze assets and prosecute members of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, which has also been on the US blacklist since 2019.
Canada’s list of “terrorist” organizations includes al-Qaeda, Islamic State, Boko Haram, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Taliban, among others. The Kots Force, an arm of the Revolutionary Guards, was already on that list.
Canada is among the countries that have taken Iran to the International Court of Justice, demanding that Tehran be held accountable for the downing of a Ukrainian Boeing in 2020 and pay reparations to the victims’ relatives.
Additionally, after the wave of protests sparked in Iran by the death of Mahsha Amini in 2022, Ottawa banned approximately 10,000 Iranian officials from entering Canada, including several members of the Revolutionary Guard corps.
