Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed European moves to decouple Russia from “global financial culture” in a new videotaped message.
“Our diplomats are fighting 24 hours a day to inspire all European countries to agree on a strong and just decision to disconnect Russia from the international interbank network. “We also have this victory,” Zelenski said.
“This is a loss of billions for Russia -a tangible price for this vicious invasion of our country … Ukraine has gained the attention of the entire civilized world. And the practical result? Here it is – SWIFT … The disconnection from the global financial culture “.
Zelensky also welcomed proposals from Turkey and Azerbaijan for peace talks with Russia and described his conversation with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi as key to agreeing more international support for Ukraine.
“We will fight for what is needed to liberate the country,” Zelenski said in a brief video message, adding that his country was currently facing a shortage of oil and petroleum products.
In “targeted and functional” restriction of international payment mechanism SWIFT Germany has agreed on Russia, Economy Minister Robert Hubbek and Foreign Minister Analena Berbock said on Saturday.
