During the trial, prosecutors claimed the family spent more on their dog than on their staff
A Swiss court has sentenced four members of the UK’s richest family to prison terms ranging from four to four and a half years.
Prakash and his wife Kamal Hinduja, as well as their son Ajay and his wife Namrata were found guilty of exploitation and illegal employment.
However, according to the BBC, they were acquitted of the most serious charge, that of human trafficking.
They spent more on their dog than on servants
Workers transferred from India claimed the family paid them just £7 (€8.30) to work 18 hours a day, less than a tenth of the amount required under Swiss law.
They also claimed that the family – whose fortune is estimated at around £37 billion – rarely allowed them to leave the house, which was in the wealthy Cologny neighborhood of Geneva.
During the trial, prosecutors claimed the family spent more on their dog than on their staff.
The elder Hindujas, both over 70, did not attend the court proceedings, citing health issues. Ajay and Namrata were present but not in court to hear the verdict. Their defense attorney says they plan to appeal the verdict.
The public prosecutor of Geneva requested their immediate detention.
It is not the first time that Geneva, a hub of international organizations as well as the world’s wealthy, has been at the center of worker abuse.
Last year, four domestic workers from the Philippines sued one of Geneva’s diplomatic missions to the United Nations, claiming they had not been paid for years.
The Hinduja family controls the Hinduja Group, a multinational conglomerate with operations in the oil, gas and banking sectors. The family also controls the Raffles Hotel in London.
