Three people were killed and 56 wounded in Saturday’s bombing in the city of Kharkiv, amid a new wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that a Russian guided bomb hit an apartment building, spreading death. A video from the scene of the attack shows the extent of the damage to the building.
The initial toll from the authorities was 19 injured, before rising to 40 and then to 56, including three children.
Zelensky condemned the strike, offering his condolences to the victims’ relatives and renewing his appeal to Western allies to support Ukraine’s armed forces. “Russian terrorism with guided bombs must and can be stopped. Bold decisions are needed from our partners to destroy Russian terrorists and the Russian warplanes they carry,” he said.
The Ukrainian president has repeatedly asked Western countries for anti-aircraft defense systems and munitions for strikes on Russian border areas.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city after the capital Kyiv, is close to the border with Russia and has been the subject of countless Russian attacks for months.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities announced additional power outages in various parts of the country following new strikes on energy infrastructure by Russian forces. A recent study by the Kyiv School of Economics estimates damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure at $56.2 billion.
