24 hours after running aground, the passenger-carrier Aratere has detached and sailed into New Zealand’s Picton port. It had run aground on its way from Picton in the South Island to the capital Wellington in the North Island.
No injuries were reported, but 47 people were forced to spend the night on board. New Zealand Transport Minister Simeon Brown described the accident as “very worrying” and pledged that an investigation would be carried out.
Divers who checked the ship’s hull said the Aratere suffered minimal damage and there was no watertightness problem, Radio New Zealand reported.
Aratere is one of three ferries operated by state-owned company KiwiRail that ply the Cook Strait that separates New Zealand’s North and South Island, serving nearly 800,000 travelers each year.
