The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, is expected to be in Brussels on Thursday, June 27, and the first day of the summit, with whom the EU leaders will have an exchange of views, as stated by the President of the European Council Charles Michel to the “27”. At the same time, in the letter of invitation to the leaders of the EU member states, he notes that the European Council will agree on the top positions in the institutions.

In particular, Charles Michel points out that the leaders will approve the Strategic Agenda, i.e. “the European Council will define the EU’s priorities and define the EU’s strategic orientations for the next five years, thus guiding the work of the next institutional cycle. Second, we will determine the path for internal reforms and third, we will agree on the appointments of the institutions.”

“Our meeting will start on Thursday, June 27 at 14:00 with an exchange of views with President Zelenksi. This will be an opportunity to discuss the situation on the ground, but also to note some achievements since our last meeting” notes Charles Michel.

He adds that “this European Council will be an opportunity to welcome the adoption of negotiating frameworks and the holding of intergovernmental conferences with Ukraine, Moldova and Montenegro. These are historic steps to support the respective path of these countries towards European integration” noting that “for the next years, together with the partners, we will secure loans for Ukraine for an additional 50 billion euros”.

At the same time, the president of the European Council states that “it is imperative that we step up our military support to Ukraine, focusing on air defense, ammunition and missiles. In addition, we must continue to gather broad international support for a just peace in Ukraine based on the UN Charter.”

The Middle East is also on the leaders’ agenda. “International law and international humanitarian law must be respected in every case. In this context, we will request the full implementation of the terms of the ceasefire proposal set out in UN Security Council Resolution 2735 and the observance and implementation of the orders of the International Court of Justice.

“We will repeat our call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages and an increase in humanitarian aid, significant enough to cover the dire needs on the ground,” Charles Michel said, adding that the EU would reiterate its unwavering commitment for a lasting and sustainable peace based on the two-state solution. “We will continue to support the Palestinian Authority and work with all our partners in the region and beyond to revive a process to that end,” he adds.

Finally, the leaders will discuss security and defence, competitiveness and enhancing competitiveness.
