SKAI on the Ukrainian-Romanian border: Families with young children leave to escape the war

by

Several volunteers have gathered at the Ukrainian-Romanian border to help those arriving.

Romanian firefighters have also gone to the scene to transport the refugees safely. Dozens of buses arrive every now and then with Ukrainians, mostly women and children. More than 10 hotels have been offered to accommodate refugees.

A woman who spoke to SKAI’s camera said that she has left behind in Ukraine her husband, her father and her brother, who chose to stay to fight, while she and her child intend to go to Italy.

Romania will send supplies and equipment worth 3m euros to Ukraine and has offered to care for the wounded in military and civilian hospitals, government spokesman Dan Carbonaru said today.

Supplies to be sent include fuel, ammunition, bulletproof vests, helmets, military equipment, food and water, he added.

In co-operation with Ukrainian border authorities, Romanian ambulances will pick up children, pregnant women and the elderly waiting in long lines to cross the border with Romania at the northeastern Siret crossing, speeding up the process.

Local authorities in border countries have already sent buses carrying food, blankets and winter clothes to Solotvino and Chernivtsi on the other side of the border with Ukraine.
