Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to becoming a member of the European Union, describing it as “strategic goal” of the country.

“Full integration into the European Union is our strategic goal. It is in our common interest that the EU approaches Turkey from a similar perspective,” Erdogan said at a joint press conference with his Estonian counterpart Alar Karis in Ankara.

Turkey submitted an application for EU membership in 1987 and has been a candidate country since 1999. Accession negotiations began in 2005 but stalled after 2007 due to the Cyprus issue and the opposition of many member states.

Referring to global and regional issues, Erdogan said the massacres in Gaza, where Israel has killed more than 37,000 Palestinians since October 7, 2023, threaten not only regional stability but also global security.

According to Anadolu, the Turkish leader said that lasting peace can only be achieved through of a two-state solutionand that the international community must now intervene.

Speaking about the Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, Erdogan said a just solution to the conflict was possible through diplomacy, but added that “initiatives that exclude Russia they will not yield results.”
