Six people were killed and five others were injured on Thursday afternoon when a train and a bus collided at a level crossing in southern Slovakia, according to the latest toll from rescue services.

“Six people succumbed to their injuries,” Slovak rescue services said, updating an earlier toll of five dead.

“At least five people were injured,” the agency added in a Facebook post.

Railway company spokeswoman Vladimira Bakhilova told AFP that the Eurocity train was traveling from Prague to Budapest.

Petra Klimesova, a spokeswoman for the rescue services, said the injured needed “immediate medical attention”. “I fear that the number of people killed in this accident will increase,” he told AFP.

A passenger, Katarina Molnarova, told AFP she “felt the crash” as the train left the city’s Nove Zamky station. “After a few minutes we were able to get off… We saw the front of the train on fire,” said the 43-year-old beautician from the southern town of Sturovo.

“There was no screaming or panic… We took our luggage and walked to the road (…) I saw pieces of the bus scattered during the crash.”

Interior Minister Matus Sutai Estok and Deputy Chief of Police Rastislav Polakovic went to the scene of the accident, police said on Facebook.

Local media released video showing passengers next to a partially burning train as thick gray smoke billowed into the sky.
