Security services in Serbia are on high alert after Saturday’s attack outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, where a gunman with a crossbow wounded a police guard in the neck. The latter shot and killed the attacker.
A man who approached a police station carrying a backpack with a crossbow was arrested Monday night in Belgrade, two days after the attack with such a weapon on the guard of the Israeli embassy in the Serbian capital.
According to authorities, the suspect drove through the barricade outside the police station and when he was told to stop, he sped away. A short while later, he was stopped by the police.
“A crossbow with seven arrows, several knives and a container containing firecrackers were found in his backpack. His motives are being investigated and his house is also being searched,” Serbian police said, clarifying that the arrested man was not on a list of known extremists. He claimed that “he is being pursued by the mafia and the secret services”, he will undergo a medical examination and then be interviewed by an investigator and a prosecutor, Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said.

Dacic announced that the perpetrator of Saturday’s “terrorist attack” was a 25-year-old Serb who had converted to Islam. His wife, who is in Montenegro, was questioned by the police at the request of the Serbian authorities.
