In the endless number of parallel sanctions on Russia, as according to the Wall Street Journal they cannot do so with gas and oil, the US, Germany and others have begun to surround media and technology companies.
On Friday (25), as reported by Forbes, Democrat Mark Warner, who chairs the Senate intelligence committee, sent letters to Alphabet (Google, YouTube), Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Twitter and other platforms, demanding actions against Russian vehicles such as RT and the Tass and Sputnik agencies.
Alphabet, Meta and Twitter responded shortly afterwards, suspending the paid boost of the aforementioned and other accounts. They also cut monetization, the advertising carried in them.
In response, Russia restricted Facebook and Twitter, which crossed Sunday almost inaccessible in the country, according to reports of Russian journalists.
Also on Sunday, via Twitter, the German Ursula von der Leyenwho chairs the European Commission, added that the European Union is “developing tools to ban” Russian vehicles, preventing access to them via the internet.
Moscow, for its part, had already barred the German DW, in response to the previous ban of the same RT by Berlin.
The escalation, which has made it difficult for users to follow not only the aforementioned outlets, but several others, on both sides, threatens the internet itself, the WSJ warned in an extensive report — highlighted with some alarm by the main technology news aggregator, Techmeme.
In short, the newspaper publishes, “analysts say that the conflict could accelerate the fracture of the internet, which until recently was divided [apenas] between China and the rest of the world”.
He highlighted, as part of the same movement, the exclusion of the now giant TikTok and other Chinese platforms by the government of India.
RESISTANCE
Some platforms don’t give in, like Telegram, originally Russian, now based in the Emirates. Its founder, Pavel Durov, also received the letter from Warner and would be under pressure from Russia, but denied any restrictive measure, as reported by Kommersant – a newspaper that, throughout Sunday afternoon, was only accessible via Telegram.
