A major operation to locate a 12-year-old boy has been underway in Australia’s Northern Territory since yesterday.

The boy went missing on Tuesday afternoon when he went swimming in the river that runs through Palampa, a remote community of just 350 inhabitants, and – according to the local police department – was probably attacked by a crocodile

“Officers are in the area and our thoughts are with the family and the community,” police spokeswoman Erica Gibson said. “They are surveying a large section of the river by boat and we thank the members of the community for their continuous help,” he adds.

It is estimated that more than 100,000 crocodiles live in Australia’s Northern Territory, but fatal attacks on people are not often reported, Reuters news agency points out.
