Democratic lawmakers worry that 81-year-old Biden’s continued candidacy will lead to a sweeping Republican victory in Washington and Donald Trump’s complete control of the presidency
Pressure is mounting on Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race, as following the bombshell New York Times report that he is considering withdrawing from the presidential race, Bloomberg reports that dozens of Democratic congressmen are considering signing a letter demanding the US president to leave.
According to Bloomberg, citing a senior party official, Democrats are reportedly determined to take action as they panic that a Biden nomination will cost them control of Congress.
Biden is now rapidly losing the support of Democratic lawmakers and candidates, as they worry that the 81-year-old’s continued candidacy will lead to a sweeping Republican victory in Washington and, by extension, Donald Trump’s absolute control of the presidency.
Democratic candidates in traditionally safe Democratic districts are already circulating the letter, the official said, underscoring the extent of panic within the party.
The White House earlier Wednesday denied a New York Times report that the president was considering dropping out of the race. However, congressional Democrats are clamoring for Biden to stay.
Control of even one part of Congress would give Democrats the ability to negotiate with a Trump White House on the 2025 tax cut and debt ceiling bills. The Democrats’ best chance would be to win the House, but there is concern that Biden’s performance will reduce the Democratic representation.
Only one sitting House Democrat — Lloyd Doggett of Texas — has publicly called for Biden to step down, but several others have distanced themselves from the president.
Biden called Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday and was scheduled to speak with his close ally and South Carolina Representative James Clyburn, people familiar with the calls said.
Clyburn earlier told CNN that Biden needs to hold events to demonstrate his intellectual acuity and allay fears about his candidacy.
If Biden can’t continue to run, Clyburn said he would support an open meeting to pick a running mate, adding that he believes Vice President Kamala Harris would do well in this process.
Biden called House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday, who is trying to calm the panic among Democrats. The US president also asked Jeffries, who has influence within the party, to prevent calls for him to withdraw.
A House aide said members feel betrayed by Biden and his staff because of how the president handled the aftermath of the debate.
Other recent reports have also fueled speculation among Democratic allies. On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that former President Barack Obama had conveyed privately to allies that Biden’s path to re-election was more difficult after his debate performance.
Reuters has released a new poll showing Vice President Kamala Harris — the most likely successor if Biden were to drop out — trailing Trump, the Republican nominee, by one point.
The president is meeting Wednesday afternoon with Democratic governors, many of whom are at the center of speculation about his possible replacement.
Some governors with extensive fundraising networks, including California’s Gavin Newsom, Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer, Maryland’s Wes Moore and Illinois’ JB Pritzker will attend the meeting in White, while others will take part online.
