Among the missing are former Prime Minister Liz Truss and Penny Mordant
Many former British government ministers and top Conservative figures lost their seats in yesterday’s general election after party crash and the Labor victory.
The outcome of this election is likely to have serious implications for the future of the Tories, who will have to recover from their historic defeat at a time when they seem torn between the far right and the centre.
The first to fall in his stronghold in north London is former Secretary of Defense Grant Shapps;who lost his seat to the Labor candidate.
Shapps is the most senior minister to lose his seat in a parliamentary election since 1997 when Michael Portillo, then defense minister, was defeated.
A close associate of outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Shapps took over the Ministry of Defense in August 2023, having moved through various front-line ministries in recent years.
And the former Prime Minister of Britain Liz Truss lost its seat in the east of England. Truss had succeeded Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, but left after just 49 days and after causing massive market disruption and a collapse in sterling.
Another loser of the elections is Penny Mordant, in charge of relations with the parliament, who in 2022 was a candidate to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister. Besides, she was considered one of the main candidates to take over the presidency of the party, if Sunak decides to resign after the defeat.
The Minister of Culture of Sunak, h Lucy Fraseralso defeated by the Lib Dem candidate.
The former minister and Brexit campaigner Jacob Rees-Moggthe “respectable gentleman from the 18th century” as he was called because of his demeanor and cross-dressing, was defeated by the Labor candidate.
And other background ministers, such as the Under Secretary of Veterans Affairs Johnny Mercer or the Terry Coffey former second-in-command Liz Truss will also not return to parliament.
Dozens of outgoing Conservative MPs have decided not to stand, such as former Prime Minister Theresa May.
On the other hand, other Conservative figures managed to save their seats, such as outgoing finance minister Jeremy Hunt, former home secretary Suella Braverman or Kenny Badenoch, trade minister under Rishi Sunak, who is often presented as a candidate for the Conservative presidency.
