The blow at the school in central Gaza was aimed at gunmen operating in the area, announced Israeli army hours after Hamas’ health ministry announced that 16 people had been killed in the attack.
“The Israeli Air Force hit several terrorists operating in buildings in the area of the UNRWA Al-Jauni school in the central Gaza Strip,” the statement said, while an effort was made to minimize civilian harm.
It is recalled that 16 people were killed by an Israeli bombardment of a school housing Palestinian refugees in the Al-Nuseirat camp, in the central sector of the Gaza Strip.
Video from the scene shows adults and children screaming on a street full of smoke, dust and debris as they run to help the injured.
Eyewitnesses told the BBC that the attack targeted the upper floors of the school, which is located near a busy market.
A local source said the target was a room allegedly used by Hamas police.
