The governments of the USA and Germany are the ones who project the strongest opposition to the idea Ukraine to be invited to join the NATO immediately, or prematurely, diplomatic sources told the German Agency amid the summit which coincides with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the military alliance.

One of the sources spoke of “strong opposition” from allies to inviting Kiev to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization without having met the necessary conditions, adding that “in the end it will be up to the allies to decide (when) to invite Ukraine to join NATO”.

These comments seem to erase Kiev’s hopes that progress would be made, after the anger expressed by the Ukrainian political leadership that such an invitation was not extended to the previous NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

“The Ukrainians were deeply disturbed when they realized that the door was open, but not that much. And I think the scenario in Washington is the same,” noted one of dpa’s sources.
