THE Hungary considers the possible return of the former US president Donald Trump at the White House would be an “opportunity for peace” in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Peter Szijardo said today, as most of his country’s NATO partners hope the Allies’ summit in Washington will send a strong message of support to Kiev .

In an interview he gave to the Reuters agency, Szijjártó said that Hungary’s goal, with the recent trip of the prime minister Viktor Orban in Moscow, was to end the war through peace talks involving both Russia and Ukraine.

“I think only a very strong external influence could make them negotiate. Who will have a chance for this next season? Only President Trump, if elected,” he commented. He also claimed that Orban’s recent meetings with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky demonstrated the great distance that separates them while other Western leaders are unwilling or unable to bring them closer.

Trump has said he would quickly terminate him war, but has not presented any detailed plan for it. Last month Reuters reported that advisers to the former president presented him with a plan to end the war that would condition any future aid to Kiev on Ukraine’s participation in peace talks.

“We see an opportunity for peace if President Trump wins. We see an opportunity for good Hungarian-American relations if President Trump wins,” he said.

Szijjártó also said that Hungary does not consider Russia a threat to it NATO or EU members and that Russian leaders are “sensible” and would not risk a direct conflict with the West. He also noted that Hungary will not oppose NATO’s plan to send a new package of military aid to Ukraine, but will not participate in it either.
