Ukrainian authorities have announced the seizure of a Cameroon-flagged cargo ship off Odessa, accused of carrying grain from Russian-occupied Crimea, the Security Services of Ukraine (SBU) announced.

At least twice, the ship Usko MFU entered the port of Sevastopol with its AIS system disabled to lose its track, according to Ukraine’s general prosecutor, who said that at least on the first occasion, in November 2023, the ship departed carrying 3,000 tons of agricultural products on behalf of a Turkish company.

Russian forces seized rural areas of southern Ukraine in the first year of the Russian invasion in 2022, and Kiev accuses Russia of stealing and destroying its grain.

According to the SBU, the captain and 12-member crew helped export several tons of Ukrainian grain from the occupied southern regions of Ukraine to the Middle East and sell it on behalf of Russia. “The investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances under which the illegal acts were committed and to identify other persons involved.”

The Azeri captain faces up to five years in prison for violating travel restrictions imposed on the Russian-held territory of Ukraine.
