About 60 bodies have been found under the rubble of buildings in Shujaya, a Gaza neighborhood from which the Israeli army says it withdrew Wednesday night after two weeks of operations, the Palestinian enclave’s Civil Protection agency said today.

“When the Israeli occupation forces withdrew from the Shujaya neighborhood, the Civil Protection teams, with the help of the residents, managed to find about 60 witnesses, until now,” said the agency’s spokesman, Mahmoud Basal.

Those people were pulled dead from the rubble of the neighborhood in Gaza City, which has turned into a “devastation zone,” he added. 85% of the buildings were deemed uninhabitable while all the infrastructure was “destroyed”, according to Basal.

On Wednesday night, the Israeli army announced that it had “completed” the operation in Shujaya, where heavy fighting had been going on since June 27, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee. According to Israel, during this operation eight tunnels were located and destroyed while “dozens of terrorists were killed».

Operations continue in central Gaza City, in the area where UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees, is headquartered. Clashes also took place in Tal al-Hawa, in the southern suburbs, while shelling was also reported in Sabra, in the west.
