Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trinto announced on Monday that his government would ban “any import of crude oil” from Russia, explaining that it was “an industry from which President (Vladimir) Putin and his oligarchs have made huge profits.”
“This sector accounts for more than a third of the Russian federal budget. “Although Canada has not imported very limited quantities in recent years, this measure sends a strong message,” he said during a news conference.
In 2019, Canada imported 17,870 barrels of Russian crude a day – up 2.6% of Canada’s total oil imports – but by 2020 that volume had dropped to almost zero, according to the Canadian government.
On Monday, Canada also announced a new shipment of weapons to Ukraine, especially anti-tank weapons, which will be delivered “as soon as possible”, as assured by the Minister of Defense, Anita Anand.
“We have seen in recent days that Putin made a serious mistake,” said Justin Trinto.
“He thought it would be easy to take over Ukraine and occupy its capital. “He thought that the West would be divided and he thought that he had foreseen all the sanctions that we would implement, but he was wrong in both (last) points”, added Mr. Trinto.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday outlined the conditions he sets to end the invasion of Ukraine, as sanctions against Russia continue and Westerners say more are coming.
