In X, conspiracy theories and false information about the events piqued the interest of users just minutes after the incident.
As the video of the shooting made the rounds on the platform, quickly garnering millions of views, the word “staged” became the second most trending topic right after Trump, with over 228,000 posts on the platform using the word.
In just one hour, numerous posts on X claiming the shooting was staged were viewed millions of times.
There is no evidence to support any claim that the shooting was staged — Trump was injured and one bystander was killed, while another was injured.
Similar posts appeared on Instagram and Meta’s Threads, but with much less traction.
“Antifa” also became a top trend on X after posts falsely identified a man as the perpetrator of the assassination attempt.
The fake posts blamed a “prominent Antifa activist,” Mark Violets, and even falsely stated that the name came from the Butler, Pennsylvania Police Department.
The posts were shared by verified accounts on X. One popular verified account, Wall Street Silver, which is known to mislead, posted the claim to 1.3 million followers and later deleted it without explanation. Russian propaganda accounts MAGA and Proud Boy Telegram channels also spread the claim.
Actually this person is Marco Violi, an Italian YouTuber who is involved in football. His account was flooded with messages accusing him of the attempted murder. Violi then made his account private and wrote on Instagram that it was fake news and that he had nothing to do with the incident.
In addition, accounts on X with hundreds of thousands of followers known for sharing false QAnon content got millions of views uploading names of high-ranking Democrats and Republicans who they said “probably colluded” with the CIA to pull off the incident. There is no evidence to support any aspect of the claim.
