Strict border controls at the Franco-German border continue until the end of the Olympics. What will happen to the rest of Germany’s borders?

The European Football Championship was also successfully completed in terms of security measures. Next bet on safety the Olympic Games starting in a few days in Paris.

According to the German Ministry of the Interior, strict checks will be carried out along the Franco-German border during the Olympics. As stated by the Minister of the Interior Nancy Fezer from the Social Democrats, the big bet is now to ensure the highest level of security for the Olympic period as well, in close cooperation with the French and European authorities.

Controls stop in the North, remain in the South

On Germany’s northern borders with Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, checks imposed for the European Football Championship will be lifted on July 19, as originally planned.

On the southern and eastern borders with Austria, Switzerland, Poland and the Czech Republic, however, border controls will continue until November 11 in the case of Austria and December 15 for the rest of the crossing points. The aim is to deal with irregular immigration, trafficking rings and organized crime, as announced by the Ministry of the Interior.

Joint article Mertz and Zender

At the same time, the newspaper Bild published a joint article by the leaders of the Christian Democrats and Christian Socialists, Friedrich Mertz and Markus Zender, in which they are calling for border controls to be kept intact at all German bordersotherwise, as they underline, “the security situation in the country will worsen”.

They positively assess the plan drawn up for the European Football Championship and thanked the members of the federal police, state police authorities and the thousands of volunteers who worked for a safe EURO.

“These successes are a gain for our country (…) A Europe with open borders can only be achieved if it is a Europe with secure borders”they mention. “We have to protect our country” is the message they are sending with multiple recipients in view of apparently also the 2025 federal election.
