US intelligence agencies have received information in recent weeks about an Iranian plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump, CNN reported today, citing unnamed well-informed officials.

In the CNN report, it is emphasized that there is no indication that the 20-year-old perpetrator of the attack at Trump’s campaign speech in Pennsylvania was connected to the said conspiracy plan.

The revelation says the US network raises new questions about security gaps at Saturday’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and how the gunman was able to gain access to a nearby building to shoot and injure the former president.

It is unclear whether the information about Iran was shared with Trump’s staff, which said in a statement: “We do not comment on President Trump’s security detail. All questions should be directed to the United States Secret Service.”

The Secret Service recently “added protective resources and capabilities to the former president’s security,” agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement Sunday.

Secret Service officials have repeatedly warned Trump’s staff against holding outdoor rallies, which pose greater risks than events where the agency can better control access, people briefed on the matter said. The warnings were more general in nature, the sources said.
