Mystery is still the loud bang that was heard across three New York states yesterday, sparking conspiracy theories.
Residents in three states reported feeling a tremor and a loud explosion Tuesday morning.

NASA estimates that a meteorite passed through the area between 10 a.m. at the same time New Yorkers reported seeing a flash of fire cross the sky and felt the ground shake slightly under their feet.

NASA also said a military exercise was taking place which may have been the cause of the shaking or bang heard by residents.

In particular, nbcnewyork reports that 20 people across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut reported seeing the ball of light speeding across the sky – with one eyewitness saying it had green, yellow and white light.

The sight lasted 30 seconds before the meteor broke into three pieces, the eyewitness wrote to the American Meteorological Society.

The American Meteor Society website does show about 20 fireball reports in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, with additional reports in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland, during that time frame.

NASA stresses that its information is preliminary and not finalized as it continues to gather information and confirm reports.
