Explosions and two air defense raid alerts were heard late Wednesday in Kiev, AFP reporters on the ground reported, 10 days after massive Russian shelling left dozens dead, including victims in the Ukrainian capital.

The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, announced via Telegram that elements of the anti-aircraft defense had been activated.

He said a drone was shot down and debris fell in the Darnitsky district (southeast), but no damage was found by members of the emergency services who went there.

A few minutes earlier, he had spoken of a fire in the district, information which he later denied.

For its part, the Ukrainian air force reported via Telegram at 22:51 (local and Greek time) that Russian drones were heading towards the capital from the east.

Other remote-controlled unmanned aerial systems were reported approaching Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, according to the same source.

In Kiev, through social networking sites, authorities urged residents to rush to the nearest shelters.

Two air defense alarms sounded in the city a few minutes apart, with the last ending at around 11:25 p.m., an AFP correspondent said.

On July 8, Russian shelling in various sectors, during which Ukraine’s main children’s hospital in Kiev was notably hit, killed at least 43 people and caused an international outcry.

The country is frequently hit by deadly strikes, missile and drone attacks. Kiev is pressing its Western allies to supply more air defense systems, as they have promised.
