A police officer was killed and another wounded in the western Serbian town of Loznica when they were shot by passengers in a taxi.

As announced by the Serbian Interior Ministry, the two police officers, who serve as border guards, on Wednesday night, a few minutes after midnight, stopped the taxi to conduct a routine check.

The occupants got out of the vehicle and one of them started shooting fatally injuring one border guard while the other has a bullet wound to the shoulder and is hospitalized in stable condition.

The perpetrators then fled on foot towards a wooded area.

The taxi driver was taken into custody and is being questioned.

The police released the information and passport photo of an attacker found inside the vehicle.

In the wider area of ​​Loznitsa, strong police forces have been deployed and with the help of aerial means they are trying to locate the perpetrators.
