Ukraine is welcome in the EU, said the head of the Central Committee of the European People’s Party, Manfred Weber, in a briefing to journalists before the start of the extraordinary plenary session of the European Parliament.
“The Ukrainians “They are the heroes of today’s struggle for freedom and our European way of life,” said Weber.
He added that Volodymyr Zelensky “asks if he is part of us, if they can have the candidacy, this must be answered with a clear ‘yes’. “Accession is a long process, everyone knows that, but our signal is strong and clear: Ukraine is welcome in the EU and you will find us by your side fighting for the freedom and democracy of our peoples.”
He also stressed that “what Putin is doing is completely opposite to what Europe stands for. He thinks with nationalism, he thinks spheres of influence. “He thinks in an Imperial Russia, we think with respect for everyone about small and big countries”.
At the same time, he stressed that the EPP “fully supports all the decisions of the last days” and spoke of “tough sanctions” on the part of the EU against Russia, but expressed the view that the restrictive measures should have been introduced before the start of the war.
