The legend of American stand-up comedy, Bob Newhart, has died at the age of 94.

The star of The Bob Newhart Show, Newhart died after a series of brief illnesses, a spokesman for the actor said.

Newhart became a stand-up comedian after starting his career as an accountant in Chicago.

In 1999 he got his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 2007 he was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Most recently, he starred in the Christmas classic Elf and The Big Bang Theory for which he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Performance in a Comedy Series
